John Edwin Clemens, 74, of Palmyra passed on after a courageous battle with ALS at his home on Saturday December 30, 2017.

Born August 11, 1943 in Hershey, he was a son of the late John E. and Virginia (Weaver) Clemens.

A member of the first graduating class of Lower Dauphin High School in 1961, he was also a graduate of Hershey Junior College and the former Millersville State Teachers’ College.  In 1997 he retired from Palmyra Area School District as a science teacher with 32 years service. He was the first coach of the Palmyra High School golf team, coaching for 20 seasons, and was one of three “Founding Fathers” of the Palmyra Area Middle School’s Outdoor Education Program.  John was elected to the Lebanon County Educational Honor Society and was a life member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association and Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. An active member of Spring Creek Church of the Brethren, he served in various ways and volunteered at Hersheypark and for Derry Township Meals on Wheels.

John was a human weather channel and a citrus romantic. He enjoyed 15 winters in Florida, building projects, golf, gardening and Corvairs. Most importantly he enjoyed spending time with his family, neighbors and friends.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years Hilda “Jill” (Diehl) Clemens; daughter Shari, wife of Peter Tuz; and son Brian Clemens; sister Janet, wife of Dr. Gary Wolfgang; and grandchildren Andrew and Elise Tuz.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, January 12, 2018 at his church, 335 East Areba Avenue, Hershey preceded by a visitation beginning at 9:00 AM.

The family is especially grateful to Dr. Peter Lewis, Dr. Zachary Simmons and the Hershey ALS Clinic Team, and Hospice for All Seasons for their care during the past eight months.
