Leonard A. Mader

Leonard A. Mader, 92, of Grantville passed away peacefully Friday, October 7, 2016 in his home.

Born July 21, 1924 in Penbrook, he was a son of the late Ben and Elsie (Hoerner) Mader and was also preceded in death by a son Donald Mader and siblings Charlotte Hostetter, Ruth Messinger, Helen Boynton and Ben Mader.

A graduate of Lower Paxton High School, he retired as an inspector from Bethlehem Steel with 36 years of service.  He was a life member, past commander and last living charter member of the Shellsville VFW #9639.  A U. S. Army veteran, he obtained the rank of Sergeant during World War II, having served in Africa and Italy in the 85th Division and was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal recipient.  He was a member of the Grantville Volunteer Fire Company, East Hanover Township Autumn Leaves, East Hanover Historical Society, Jonestown American Legion, the One Room Schoolhouse Association and a life member of the Hershey Disabled American Veterans.  Leonard enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, hunting, playing pinochle and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Surviving are his wife of 70 years Helen M. (Fulk) Mader; children Elaine Royer, Ernest, husband of Mary Jane Mader, Glenn, husband of Lynne Mader, and Joseph, husband of Shelley Mader; daughter-in-law Judith Mader; sister Eleanor Judy; grandchildren Douglas, Brian, Lisa, Denise, Jeremy, Kim, Dan and Laura; and 13 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 165 Firehouse Road, Grantville.  Viewings will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at the Shellsville VFW and 10:00 – 10:30 AM Wednesday at the church.  Interment, with military honors, will be in Grantville Cemetery.
