William L. "Skip" Reed, Jr. Obituary

William Leroy “Skip” Reed, Jr., age 95, of Middletown, Swatara Township, died December 26,2024 at Oak Hill Village.

 

He was born on June 21, 1929, in Harrisburg, PA., the son of Roy and Bernice (Keim) Reed.

 

He was a graduate of Swatara Township High School Class of 1947. He attended Harrisburg Area College, graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree in 1951, and a Master of Engineering Administration in 1959. He served as an officer in the Air Force from 1952 to 1955, worked at Martin Aircraft Co., and Westinghouse Electronics before working for the U.S. Department of Defense. He retired as a Senior Executive from the D.O.D. in 1989. He married his high school classmate, Arlene (Houtz) Reed, June 2, 1951, and they enjoyed 70 married years together before her death in 2021.

 

He is survived by their daughter Sharon Reed and husband Dr. Mark Horney of Oregon; son Dr. Randall Reed, his wife Patricia (Strader) Reed of Virginia, and granddaughter Jacqueline Reed of Utah. He had no brothers or sisters.

 

Skip was active in his church, Boy Scouting, and other organizations. He also enjoyed traveling extensively with Arlene during their active years visiting all 50 states, many in their motorhome. His work with the D.O.D took him on a residential assignment for two years in Norway with travel throughout Europe. They enjoyed cruises in the Caribbean, and his final foreign trip to complete their "bucket-list" was to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India in 2011 with his wife Arlene to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring of 2025 for family and friends to honor and remember him.
