Mary E. Mitchell, 92, of Londonderry Village, Palmyra went home to her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
Born March 14, 1929 in Tyrone, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Mary C. (Neugebauer) Walter. She was the widow of James G. Mitchell since March 2017 and also preceded in death by sons Philip James Mitchell and Jeffrey Joel Mitchell, great granddaughter Madelyn Lee Davison, brother Charlton Walter and sister Sunja Ryan.
Mary loved children and she and Jim cared for 37 foster children over the span of 20 years. She volunteered countless hours in the nursery, teaching Sunday School, Pioneer Girls or VBS as a member of Maranatha Tabernacle and North Chester Baptist Church. A member of Hershey Free Church, she could be heard singing in the choir and participating in the Easter program. She was a former volunteer for Helping Hands of Sandy Cove alongside Jim and loved being on the welcoming committee at Londonderry Village. Mary was an avid reader and her treasured time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren were often snuggled up with a book. She had the ability to make the people she met feel loved and special. One way she showed that was faithfully sending cards for every occasion, big or small, happy or sad. Mary’s greatest joy was when she was surrounded by her family.
Surviving are her children Timothy Paul Mitchell, husband of Debbie of Lancaster, Melody Beth, wife of Donald Vanderveer of Palmyra, Peter Andrew Mitchell of Secane, Dawn Darlene, wife of Butch Lombardozzi of Annville; and daughter-in-law Sandy Engle of Allentown; sister Tithe Presto of North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday May 8, 2021 at 1:30 pm at Hershey Free Church, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown preceded by a visitation from 12:30 pm. Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
