Leroy "Lenny" Bennett

Leroy Bennett of Grantville, PA passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Hershey Medical Center.  Lenny was born December 9, 1945 in Manhattan, NY. He was preceded in death by grandparents: V. Estelle A. Hedman Bennett (Feb. 6, 1895-March 23, 1970), and Leroy Bennett (born in Jamesburg, NJ in 1897-Aug. 5, 1980),  Mother, Pamela E. (Bennett) Ford (1920-1/19/2012), Step father, William A. Ford (4/28/1919-5/13/1986), and siblings: William Ford, Jr. (11/8/1948-1/22/2015), and Pamela (Ford) Pullen. Surviving family is sister Sarah (Ford) Reiggleman of Perrineville, NJ and several nieces and nephews.

The Bennett family held ties to Jamesburg, NJ Presbyterian Church and proudly served in the US Military including Leroy Bennett who served in the US Army during WWI before attended Rutgers University.  And, William A. Ford having served in the US Army.

After serving briefly in the US Army (Ranger Infantry PVT-E2) Leroy found his calling from his love of horses.  He worked at harness and thoroughbred tracks throughout the United States most of his adult life to include Penn National Racetrack.  “Lenny” as he was known was an assistant horse trainer, groom, and stable employee for more than 20 years at Penn National before becoming a longtime volunteer of the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America.  Lenny loved all things horses, was an avid reader of westerns, a civil war buff, great at Bible trivia, loved cards games and, was able to do crosswords puzzles in pen.  Lenny spent his last years serving others and will be greatly missed by all that were blessed to know him.  A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 12:00 at the Penn National Racetrack Chapel, 1111 Firehouse Road, Grantville, PA.   Mr. Bennett will be laid to rest with military honors at Indiantown Gap National on June 25, 2024.
