John S. Gergle, Jr. Obituary

John S. Gergle, Jr., 90, of Palmyra passed away Friday, March 25, 2022.

 

Born March 12, 1932 in Lebanon, he was the son of the late John S., Sr. and Mary (Bomgardner) Gergle and also preceded in death by a son John S. Gergle, III.

 

Retired from Bethlehem Steel, John was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korea War and member of Lebanon VFW #23 and Lawnton American Legion #998.  He served as Past Commander of Navy Club #91 and Palmyra American Legion #72.  John was a member of the Rexmont Fire Company, Lebanon Goodwill Fire Company, Knights of Columbus 4th degree, and Holy Spirit Catholic Church since 1998.  A Scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop #35, he also coached with the Governors Keystone Baseball Team, Baseball Camps of America in New York and New Jersey, served as pitching coach for Cedar Crest High School and Millersville University baseball teams and as head coach of Lebanon Valley College Baseball and Lebanon Catholic High School Baseball.  As a player, John was part of the 1953 All Star Navy Baseball Team, Millard Quarry Twilight Baseball League, Blue Mountain Baseball League, and Lebanon Twilight League.  He was a member and musician of the Musicians Union and played lead guitar in “The Saints” dance band.

 

Surviving are his wife Frances K. (Holiway) Gergle; son Stephen John Gergle; daughter Stephanie J. Strayer; step daughters Kristina Nicole Staub and Sunny Jo Goodyear; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

 

A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, March 31, 2022 at Buse Funeral Home, 145 North Grant Street, Palmyra preceded by a viewing from 10:00 AM.  Interment, with military honors, in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
