John Henry Brontsema Obituary

John Henry Brontsema, 89, formerly of Hershey passed away March 29, 2025, at Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.

Born August 30, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of the late Henry and Johanna (Niemeyer) Brontsema and brother of Joanie Forney of Alamo, CA. He was married to Diane Denington, of East Lansing, MI for 60 years before she preceded him in death. John’s legacy lives on through his three daughters: Sheri Lynn Sebastian (Tom) of Snohomish, WA, Kimberlee Joy Brontsema of Gilbert, AZ and Jodette Ann Ashcraft of San Tan Valley, AZ and his beloved grandchildren Tess Sebastian, Carly Sebastian, and Blakelee Evans (Sophia Buie).

John was inclusively friendly, encouraging and had a deep faith and love for God. Since childhood, John was an exceptional athlete and loved “playing ball” at every opportunity. During his junior year at Wheaton High School, he joined the Naval Reserves and served in active duty during the Korean War. John attended Wheaton College, where he met Diane and later attended the University of Illinois. Playing baseball, basketball and soccer goalie were his priority.

He and Diane were especially proud and humbled to have played an integral role in the start of the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey. He loved the Lord, and he loved his girls. He also loved his extended family, many friends, sports, food, music and singing (loudly).

His love of engaging with, coaching and mentoring others resulted in his success in personnel management and sales. Carson Pirie Scott, Wanamaker’s, Hershey Foods-Reese’s and Chocolate World, as well as Covenant Retirement Communities in FL, WA and CA.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, June 7, 2025 at the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey, 330 Hilltop Road, Hummelstown, PA 17036 preceded by a visitation from 1:00 PM. Reception immediately follows. Private interment in Broadview Cemetery, Hershey.
