Joan M. Scheetz Obituary

Joan M. Scheetz, 88, of East Hanover Township, Dauphin County passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023. Prior to her move to this residence, she lived in Doylestown for 48 years. Joan was a 1953 graduate of Lansdale High School where she was a member of the marching band and basketball team.

Born January 8, 1935 in Fayette County, she was a daughter of the late Karl Willard and Margueritte Elizabeth (Baer) Miller. As a child, Joan loved spending time at her grandparents’ dairy farm in Masontown, Pennsylvania.

In her earlier years, Joan enjoyed sewing, knitting, and embroidering. She often sewed clothing for her daughters including matching dresses and coats for Easter. In her later years, Joan enjoyed knitting scarves to give to her family at Christmas. She loved to bake cookies, pies, and cakes. Her vanilla fudge was also delicious. Joan was the proud creator of poetry throughout her life. She also enjoyed reading nonfiction, then sharing her new knowledge with others. Joan loved gardening, and later tending to her African violets. Her extended family was her greatest source of pride.

Retired from retail sales, she was a member of the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren where she enjoyed Bible studies, church services, and volunteering for various activities. When she was no longer able to attend services and activities, Joan enjoyed visits from the members of her church. Joan also treasured the company of her neighbors, Kari, Cheryl, and Kathleen.

For the last few years, Joan was a member of Harrisburg SeniorLIFE. She enjoyed their activities, the other seniors, and the wonderful staff members. With the support of the staff, she was able to stay in her own home until her passing which is exactly what she desired.

Surviving are her two daughters Wendy, widow of George Hummel, Jr. of Winfield, PA and Paula, wife of Craig Mackrides of Golden, IL; siblings, Barbara Sue Terry, Herbert J. Miller, Faye M. Hendricks, and David B. Miller; grandchildren, Beth (Hummel) Huff, Nicholas and Laura Mackrides; step grandchildren, Alaina Hummel and George Hummel III; greatgrandchildren, Chase Carter and Emmett Huff. Additional survivors include her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Karl Terry and her niece, Liesel Hendricks.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren, 335 East Areba Avenue, Hershey, PA. A visitation will be held at 10:00 AM with a service at 11:00 followed by a luncheon.
