James V. Bertrand, 80, of Palmyra, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Sunday, August 23, 2020 following a nearly year long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Westfield, MA, he was a son of the late Alonzo and Leona (Brezina) Bertrand. He was also predeceased by his brother Wayne.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Hobart College and a Master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. He was a proud Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War, Invasion of Grenada and the Gulf War. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 31 years of dedicated and honored service. His final assignment was as Chief of Intelligence with the PAANG 193rd Special Operations Group. Following his retirement, he worked primarily as a substitute teacher at Palmyra Area High School, where he was a student favorite because of his war stories, life lessons and good nature.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Kathleen, their children Jennifer (Keith), Jeffrey (Cathe) and Jessica, and grandchildren Olivia, Mia and Chuck. He was kind hearted, funny and a true gentleman who loved each member of his family without judgment and beyond measure.
Private inurnment will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with a Memorial Mass to be held at his parish, the Church of the Holy Spirit, 300 West Pine Street, Palmyra, at a date to be determined.
