C. Austin Hetrick Obituary

C. Austin Hetrick of East Hanover Township, Annville, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the age of 97.

Austin was born to his father Enos Eugene Hetrick and mother Mary Ellen (Shurr) Hetrick near Birdsboro in Berks County at the home of his maternal grandparents.  He grew up in Grantville and then at Harpers where, after graduation from Jonestown High School and business college in Lebanon, he helped to grow the family business known as E. E. Hetrick & Son general store that his father had established at Harpers.

He met his wife Ellen May Peiffer at business school and they married in 1947.  In addition to attending to the various duties of the store operation, Austin raised laying hens to produce the eggs which were retailed in the store.  Austin, often called Auddie or just Aut, was known by his hard work.  As his family grew and the store flourished, Austin also raised sheep or fattened steers for market, and he always planted a large garden as well as a truck-patch filled with corn, beans, and potatoes.

He was a lifelong member of the former Zion Lutheran Church, Grantville.  Austin was an excellent carpenter.  In addition, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, small game hunting, rounds of pinochle, and occasional golf.  He was also a dedicated Phillies fan.

Austin was preceded in death by his wife Ellen in September of 2007 and by his sister Jean Elizabeth (Hetrick) Stohler.

He is survived by his daughters Karen J., widow of Richard W. Armpriester of Lebanon, Brenda S., wife of Robert G. Hunter of Lebanon, Joan L., wife of Donald L. Parker of Annville, and Doris E., wife of William H. Mohr of Collegeville, along with seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

A visitation for Austin is planned for Friday, May 27, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Buse Funeral Home, 145 North Grant Street, Palmyra.  All are invited to attend.  The funeral will follow immediately at 12:00 noon concluding with interment at Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra.  Because of the recent surge in Covid cases, the family requests visiting friends and family to kindly wear masks indoors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Farmland Trust, 1150 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20036.
