Bettye Anderson Frederic, 86, of Annville, Pennsylvania transitioned peacefully at home with family on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
Born February 13, 1939, in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the youngest child of the late William Matthew Anderson and Girlie Louise Anderson Davis. Bettye was preceded in death by her siblings Juanita Smith and William Anderson, former husbands Homer Frederic and Cornelius Aberdeen, great granddaughter Kaleiah Jones, and nephew Samuel Keaton Jr.
Surviving her are her beloved sister Janice Calloway; loving children Michael Frederic, David Frederic, Ramona Ndlovu (Bukhosi); grandchildren David Frederic, Jr. (Keyonna), Siphosenkosi Ndlovu, Thabani Ndlovu, Jaden Fode, Anyo Chau; great grandchildren Kyara Coleman, Daveah Frederic, Rico Frederic, Elijah Applewhite, and Robert, Eithan, and Destini Knick; nieces Stephanie Smith Jiles, Angela Keaton Simpson (Gregory), Niquelle Wright (Stacey); and nephews Benjamin Keaton and Andre Anderson.
Bettye graduated from Ullman High School in Birmingham, AL in 1955, Dillard University in New Orleans, LA with a BSN in 1959, and Boston University in Boston, MA with a master’s degree in public health nursing in 1966 as a single mother of two boys.
She retired in 2015 after a full career in public health including time in higher education. She worked for Flint Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans, LA; Camp Atwater in North Brookfield, MA; Visiting Nurses of Springfield, MA; University of Massachusetts School of Nursing as graduate faculty; Baystate Medical Center Wesson Memorial; Coordinator of the Neighborhood Health Center in Springfield, MA; Director for the Board of Health for the Town of Amherst, MA; and Deputy to the Commissioner, Division of Health and Human Services for the City of Springfield, MA over the course of her career.
She enjoyed playing tennis, traveling the world, spending time with her family, reading, gardening (becoming a Master Gardener in 2015), and volunteering with numerous community groups. Bettye was a member of St. John’s Congregational Church of Springfield, lifetime member of the Western Massachusetts Black Nurses Association, a Local Public Health Institute (LPHI) Fellow, a lifetime member of the Springfield branch of the NAACP, and an Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority member.
On June 26, 2025, a Celebration of Life service beginning with visitation with the family at 1 pm followed by service at 2 pm will be held at St. John’s Congregational Church, 45 Hancock Street, Springfield, MA. The service will be live streamed on the St. John’s Congregational Church website. A private interment in Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Campbelltown, PA will be held at the family’s discretion.
