Martha C. Gibbel Hunsicker, 96, of Londonderry Village, Palmyra, passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Village.
Born October 5, 1922 in Beatrice, Nebraska, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Claassen) Thimm, grew up on farm, and went to a one room school house in Beatrice which is now part of a National Park.
She received her Registered Nurses Degree from Bethel Hospital in Newton, KS and her Bachelor of Science Degree from Bethel College in 1952. Martha had various nursing jobs throughout her career including Director of Nursing in the Mennonite Hospital in Beatrice, NE.
In 1958, she married Rev. Ira Gibbel and they had one son, Mark. They served churches in Kansas City, MO, Newport News, VA, New Enterprise, PA and Johnstown, PA before retiring in 1988 to the Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, Palmyra. Ira died in 1993 and Martha was remarried to Paul Hunsicker for 14 years until his death in 2009. In addition to her parents and two husbands, she is preceded in death by sisters Hildegard Jantzen and Ellen Esau.
Surviving are her son Mark, husband of Becky Gibbel of Brooklyn, NY; three grandchildren Kate Gibbel, James Gibbel, and Rowan Smart; step daughters Shirley, wife of Robert Gallager and Paullete Griefen; step grandchildren Timothy, Brian and Katherine and their families; sister Anna Marie, wife of Gordon Schrag; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A fellowship and service will be held 12:00 Noon, Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Stoneback Pavilion at Londonderry Village, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra. Interment 10:30 AM Friday in Meyer Cemetery, 1179 Greble Road, Lebanon.
