W. Michael "Mike" Chew

June 9, 1950 ~ October 4, 2016 (age 66) 66 Years Old

W. Michael “Mike” Chew, 66, of Grantville passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at his home.

Born June 9, 1950 in Aberdeen, Maryland, he was a son of the late William L. and Miriam (Chase) Chew.

A graduate of Boiling Springs High School, Mike was employed by Manada Golf Course, Grantville and formerly a self-employed carpenter.  He was a lay speaker for the United Methodist Church and member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, where he was involved in helping with the Youth and Vacation Bible School.  Sharing his recovery was very important to “Mid-City Mike” as a 35-year friend of Dr. Bob and Bill Wilson.  Involved in Boy Scout leadership for New Birth of Freedom Council, the former Keystone Area Council, he was past maintenance chairperson and past brotherhood advisor.  He was an Order of the Arrow member and a Vigil Honor recipient receiving his vigil name of “Gischihan.”  Mike was a ten-year member of the Grantville Volunteer Fire Company.  Compassion and caring will live on through every life Mike has touched as they in turn touch other lives.

Mike went on mission trips to Haiti and Sierra Leone, enjoyed camping, playing golf and guitar, trying to sing, horseback riding, reading, and liked to buy and smoke cigars.  He enjoyed woodworking especially with his scroll saw, both in his shop and at scout camp.  A conversationalist, he was always ready to discuss politics or religion.  Anyone that knew Mike knew he was one in a million, a real character and loved to be a real agitator.

Surviving are his loving wife Marisa (Acri) Chew; children Zachery Chew of Delaware and Jennifer Lee of Harrisburg; sister Suzanne Love of Maryland; half-brother William Lloyd Chew, III of Belgium; former wife and mother of their children Elizabeth Chew; grandchildren Noble, Jerry, and Alana Chew, Xander Lee and Lilith Bryington; nephews Michael Love, Nicholas, Matthew, Roman and Aaron Acri; and niece Melissa Borns.

A memorial service will be held 6:30 PM Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at his church, 165 Firehouse Road, Grantville preceded by a visitation from 4:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dogs Den, 127 San-Jo Drive, Grantville, PA 17028 or PAWS, PO Box 855, Camp Hill, PA 17001 or Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
