Lois J. (Johns) Keiter

November 2, 1922 ~ August 17, 2016 (age 93) 93 Years Old


Lois J. Keiter was born in Shamokin on November 2, 1922 to the marriage of Chester and Laura (Shade) Johns.
 
Lois was the valedictorian of Coal Township High School and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1944. She later earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lebanon Valley College.  While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, James Marcus Keiter, MD, who died on September 4, 2012 after 66 years of marriage.
 
In addition to creating a loving and nurturing home for the couple’s four children, Lois was a substitute school nurse in Lebanon County.  She was involved in the Lebanon County Medical Auxiliary, the Lebanon Valley Art Association and Lebanon Valley Forum.  She was a former President of the Palmyra Women’s Club and a member of Palm Lutheran Church, where she served as a lector. She enjoyed teaching ESL to Vietnamese refugees in a church sponsored program and kept in lifelong contact with some of her students.

 
Lois had a plethora of interests, many of which she shared with her husband, including gardening, traveling, golfing, skiing and playing tennis.  A creative person, she enjoyed floral design, pottery, art, music and language. Lois had a tireless enthusiasm for life and learning.

 

Lois J. Keiter died on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Columbia Cottage in Palmyra.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother Arthur Johns and sister Frana Johns.
 
Surviving are her children, Jeffrey A. Keiter, Barbara A. Keiter, Joan L. Keiter, and Carol A. Keiter; daughter-in-law, Mary E. Collins; son-in-law, Graeme Cowen; sister-in-law, Gerry Johns; grandchildren, Thomas C. Keiter, Megan K. Keiter, Charles W. Low, Andrew J. Low, and Carolyn B. Low; two step-grandchildren, Stacey E. Heiner and Christopher Michael Heiner; nephews, Thomas Keiter, James Keiter, David Keiter, John Keiter, Kenneth Johns and Thomas Johns; great grandsons, Carter Low and Dennis Low; and many other relatives and friends.
 
Private interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville will be held at the convenience of the family.  A memorial service will be held at a future date.
