James G. Mitchell, 91, of Londonderry Village, Palmyra was carried by the angels to his Lord on Saturday, March 18, 2017.
Born August 14, 1925 in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late James G. and May (Lore) Mitchell and was also preceded in death by sons Philip James Mitchell and Jeffrey Joel Mitchell, great granddaughter Madelyn Lee Davison and sisters Helen Fettes and Demetra Carlberg.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and retired after 42 years with Western Union. He was a member of Hershey Evangelical Free Church, the financial secretary for 19 years at Maranatha Tabernacle, the resident handyman for the 35 widows of North Chester Baptist Church, a volunteer for Londonderry Village and Helping Hands of Sandy Cove. Along with his wife, Mary, he cared for 37 foster children over a span of 20 years.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years Mary E. (Walter) Mitchell; children Timothy Paul Mitchell, husband of Debbie of Lancaster, Melody Beth, wife of Donald Vanderveer of Palmyra, Peter Andrew Mitchell of Secane, Dawn Darlene Mitchell of Annville, and daughter-in-law Sandy Mitchell of Allentown; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the DiMatteo Worship Center of Londonderry Village, 1200 Grubb Road, Palmyra preceded by a visitation at 10:00 AM. Private interment, with military honors, will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
