Gary Dale Koppenhaver, 73, of Hummelstown, died Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Hershey Medical Center.
Born September 25, 1942 in Valley View, he was a son of the late Walter and Estella (Herb) Koppenhaver and was also preceded in death by brother Donald Koppenhaver, sister June Imschweiler and nephew David Koppenhaver.
Gary happily married Nancy (Morse) Koppenhaver in 1983. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Dale Koppenhaver of Lisburn and Kenneth Koppenhaver of Etters; step-son Michael Zeiders of Hershey; grandsons Brenden Koppenhver and Aidan Zeiders; granddaughters Katelyn Koppenhaver and Addison Pruneau; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Gary was a proud 1960 graduate of Tri-Valley High School. He went on to serve in the United States Navy aboard the USS Paracutin from 1960 – 1963, stationed in San Francisco with duty served in the Philippines and Japan. After his Naval service he worked as a machinist for the Quaker Oats Company for 28 loyal years.
In his younger days, Gary was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors and passed on his knowledge of sportsmanship and conservation to his sons, among many others. He grew to become an expert in bird and wildlife identification and spent many days afield at the Second Mountain Hawk Watch. He loved golf and for decades was an active player at the Manada Golf Club, where he achieved two hole in ones. He enjoyed taking cruises, traveling and listening to jazz, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his grandkids, family and friends. Gary was a member of Shells Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grantville.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 PM Friday, November 13, 2015 at Shells Evangelical Lutheran Church, 287 Shells Church Road, Grantville. Visitations will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Thursday and 12:30 – 1:30 PM Friday both at the church. Interment, with military honors, will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Harrisburg.
